Yellowstone 2004
- This was my second hiking vacation, for which I was able to miss the Republican convention in NYC. I hiked about 50 miles, got a nasty sunburn, and ate very well at the Roosevelt Lodge. A large black bear crossed the road right in front of me, but I couldn't get my camera out fast enough to get the picture. The park is designed for cars, and very unfriendly to those without.
Glacier 2005
- This was my first trip to Glacier, and I went a little photo happy. There are more purely scenic shots here than from the '06 trip. Glacier is somewhat like an inverted Grand Canyon, with an upthrusted plateau eroded into hanging valleys with circques at the high end and a water fall at the bottom. It is also, of course at the continental divide and not desert but snow bound for most of the year.
Big Ditch
- These are the pictures from my recent trip to the Grand Canyon (I went once before, in 2003). I did not have my camera with me when the three condors flew into the lookout below Bright Angel lodge, nor did I get pictures of the lodge and the Colter fixtures and fireplaces. Note that when looking up a trail the cliff above is probably not the rim, but the top of a plateau below the rim.
Glacier 2006
- These are pictures from my second visit to Glacier National Park, in the northwestern corner of Montana, on the border with Idaho and Canada. I went the year before as well, but didn't see a grizzly so I had to go back.
